My work experience placement at TMG gave me exposure to three areas of the business: Magazines, Fashion and HR!
I started the day by working for the Telegraph Magazine, the part of the magazine that is kept within the newspaper itself, which writes and produces a piece of work based around a theme (e.g. Europe Hotels, Countryside). I did some archiving, which involved printing out the featured pages, writing down the date and then putting them in the correct order, which was quite interesting to do!
I was then taken down to the Fashion department, where I was given a tour around the magazine department, and even went into the fashion closet to try things on! I was also shown how they run the actual writing of the magazine, how they hold shoots for the photos that would be going in the magazine and how all of the writers hold regular meetings, to see how well all the colours and articles will look in the magazine when it is published.
I spent the afternoon working on a project for the HR department. This involved helping to design a section for the Telegraph Academy website which will cover Apprenticeships. Part of this involved interviewing the Head of Talent and People Development about the Apprenticeship programme. My interview will even be live on the website! I also went to a meeting with an organization that specializes in promoting work to young people like myself.
Overall, I had an absolutely fantastic day. Everyone was so welcoming and it definitely opened a few doors. Also, going to TMG, I thought I would just be working with journalists, and thought the Telegraph was purely a newspaper; but there are so many other departments and things to do! I am really happy that I chose to spend a day here, and I would definitely advise people on applying for work experience here. You never know what you will come away having learnt!
